Mare: Breeding Soundness Examination

two foals at play

As the name implies, a soundess exam, is intended to evaluate the mare for suitability or fitness for breeding. It is NOT a method to determine fertility of the mare. It implies a judgment based upon certain defined criteria of clinical importance as to whether the mare in question has the robustness, health, wellness, conformation, anatomy, and etc., to be reasonably suited for the prospect of breeding, and likewise reasonably expected to be able to conceive and carry a foal to term. It is a snapshot in time and is valid with respect only to the findings and conclusions supported by the examination findings on the day it is/was performed. It does NOT imply any future guarantee or lifelong sutability as a broodmare.

$250 per mare; includes rectal palpation and ultrasound exams, vaginal speculum and manual cervical exams, endometrial culture, cytology, and biopsy. Lab fees for bacterial and / or fungal cultures, cytology and histopathology (biopsy) are additional.

Cytogenetic (DNA) analysis and hormonal profiles are extra if required or requested.

Mares brought to my barn/ facility for examinations, breeding, and / or foaling pay a one time admission fee ($40); boarded horses will not be charged a farm call.

Note: The fees listed here may not necessarily reflect the current fees set for each item. Call or email Dr. Ley for a current fee estimate.
