Stallion Semen Freezing (Cryopreservation)

Cryopreservation or freezing of stallion semen has been utilized in the horse breeding industry for decades. It has gained popularity with mare owners due the worldwide availability of horse genetics, ease of use, and much improved conception rates. Cost of semen cryopreservation can sometimes be a decision point, but in general this aspect of equine ART (assisted reproductive technology) can be much more cost effective when services are provided by a skilled reproductive specialist and can add years of use to the potential breeding lifespan of your stallion.

Stallion Semen Collection for Cryopreservation (Freezing Semen)

Initial semen collection and evaluation for freezing suitability: $600.00

Subsequent collections for freezing suitable ejaculates: $400.00

Frozen semen storage fees: $20-40.00 per month depending on number of insemination units or straws maintained

Liquid nitrogen vapor (dry) shipper rental is $250.00/shipment (domestic); $500.00(international)

Frozen semen handling fee for shipping or receiving semen is $75.00/shipment (domestic) and $150.00 (international)

Refundable vapor shipping container deposit is $1,500.00

Emergency shipping fee if less than 24 hours notice is $100.00; no guarantees to availability with notice of less than 24 hours.

Dr. Ley manages frozen semen storage and distribution:

Liquid nitrogen storage tanks are available on site for a limited supply of frozen semen straws. Bulk storage for large numbers of straws is located off-site at a local, large commercial semen freezing and storage facility. He can coordinate and arrange semen shipments from your bulk supplies within 24-48 hours (weekends excluded), and have it shipped overnight to your contracted mare owner. The mare owner must provide a valid credit card number for payment of all fees in advance.
